Just don't call me an accountant
I am a numbersmith. Other people might call me an accountant but I believe there is more to creating solid financial foundations for a business.
True, I am qualified as a chartered accountant (CA). For the past 20 years or so I have been working with early stage and growing companies. Most of them are based around central Scotland, and most of them operate within the technology industry.
Whether you call me a consulting finance director, chief financial officer (CFO) or your company secretary does not necessarily make a great deal of difference. In either capacity, my role has been to advise and guide my clients through the financial and strategic aspects of starting and growing a company.
Founding a startup is busy work. Most founders fulfil a number of roles during their first couple of years in business. As a consulting CFO for startups, I can be as much part of your team as you want me to. At the same time, I bring extensive financial expertise to the table.
Having said this, there are various things I don’t do. These include statutory company accounts, personal tax returns or corporation tax returns. However, I have a good black book of folks who are much better qualified to look after these things than I am.
